Research Associate in Modelling and Simulation of User Interfaces for Disabled and Elderly Citizens
Department of Engineering
Vacancy Reference No: NA05997 Salary: £27,183-£35,469
Limit of tenure applies*
Applications are invited for a 3 year postdoctoral research associate position to join a medium scale focused research project on an EU FP7, Accessible and Assistive Information and Communication Technologies grant: "GUIDE - Gentle User Interfaces for Disabled and Elderly Citizens " commencing in February 2010 subject to contract with EU.
The consortium also includes laboratories in Germany, Portugal, and Spain and industrial partners in France and Germany. The post will involve the specification, modelling and simulation of multi-modal interactions with ICT applications on TV set-top boxes. The GUIDE project develops a toolbox of adaptive, multi-modal user interfaces that target the accessibility requirements of elderly and impaired users in their home environment, making use of TV set-top boxes as processing and connectivity platform.
The post will require a PhD and background in either computer science, signal processing or HCI, cognitive science and ICT interaction design. Significant research experience in working with advanced modelling techniques and a track record of user modelling and simulation of impaired interaction using data from experimental user studies of elderly and impaired computer users would be advantageous. The best-equipped candidate will have some experience with signal processing methods; the use of user modelling tools such as CPM-GOMS, and experience with data collection from movement data and eye-tracking.
The post will involve fundamental research in modelling and simulating the behaviour of elderly and impaired users with the aim of providing novel interfaces to TV set-top boxes for these users. The project will devise new algorithms for tracking and prediction of user intentionality from noisy input device data, based on prototype work carried out in Cambridge using particle filters. It will also involve contributing to the GUIDE manual and co-ordination of, and substantial contribution to project reports of both administrative and research nature as well as writing and publication of academic papers. The researcher will be based in the Engineering Design Centre at the Department of Engineering but the post will also involve co-ordination and cooperation with other researchers working on the same and related EU projects; active engagement in research discussions and meetings with other project partners from different European institutions, and travel to project meetings in varying EU locations.
