Research Assistants in Ubiquitous Interaction Design, Open University (2 Posts)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
OTIH (Out There In Here) EPSRC project
Post Ref: 6188 & 6187
£27,183 - £28,839 (Full-Time) & £29,704 - £35,469 pro rata (15 hours a week)
2 Research Assistants (Temporary posts)
Based in Milton Keynes (35mins from London)
This presents an exciting opportunity within world-class research to advance ubiquitous technologies and our understanding of equality in distributed learning. Funded by the Digital Economies programme (EPSRC led) and collaborating with Microsoft and the Sea, this project seeks to develop middleware that will link multi-touch table top and mobile technology to support distributed teams for field trip learning.
In these posts you will be using the TV series 'Treasure Hunt' as an analogy to support system development to connect mobility impaired and disadvantaged students with those out in the field (e.g. at a quarry). One part-time RA will build upon previous pilots to develop mobile technology that will support the field based investigations. The other RA will co-ordinate synchronous collaboration and evaluation with mobility impaired and disadvantaged students using tabletop technology at the university. The evidence from the mobile and tabletop evaluations will increase our understanding of equity in collaboration and support a business case for alternative approaches to distance learning and of knowledge sharing in other domains (e.g. healthcare, safety critical industries).
Both posts will be based in the Institute of Educational Technology but will work across various OU departments (including Computer Science, the Knowledge Media Institute and Science) and closely with the pervasive lab team which is housed in a new 'state of the art' building containing several developmental and usability labs essential for the project.
The applicants will need excellent computing research and communication skills, flexibility, enthusiasm, a good grounding in system development, and an academic background in Computing or a field which is relevant to the research such as human computer interaction or Psychology, preferably with experience in mobile communications or ubiquitous computing.
