Everyone,
As your American kin, I applaud the idea.
I've noticed in my book research that each time the BBC supposedly examines some aspect of Black Britishness (i.e. The Colony, Ain't No Black, Black and White in Colour, Windrush, etc.) the suggested impact of Africans and Caribbeans upon the Empire is lessened, and lessened.
There is a whole generation of young Britons who don't clearly understand how people of color helped to shape that nation. Furthermore, there is still a preponderance of redefining whiteness as a normative value when defining Britain.....

We should write to Andrew Marr also. He should give answers.

I think we should take up the issue with the BBC - and then perhaps get
something into their magazine. What has it done that's so good? Small
Island, yes. What else?

I will be happy to draft a letter of concern (not complaint) when I have
heard from several of you. I did not see the whole series, nor have I had
time to read the book. Any letter expressing concern (not complaint) needs
to recognise the good things the BBC has been doing across TV and radio in
recent weeks as evidenced by postings on BASAJISC. The other approach which
will reach more people is to also write a letter to BBC History magazine.

Dear All,
I am a little better, so trying to clear my head of all its litter
I think it is important that we should complain to the BBC re the Andrew
Marr programs, the Making of Modern Britain. I'm not sure to whom; but the
BBC site given Amanda Rice at [log in to unmask]
a) Marr does not mention the Black population of the UK at all
b) There was nothing in the program on WWI on the colonial 'contributions'
(in the military, raw materials) and the racial discrimination in the
military as all colonial troops were officered by Whites; the British did
not use colonial troops (except some Indians) to fight against Europeans as
this was thought unwise - so on the European front they served mainly as
labour corps
c) Nothing about the 1919 riots
d) Nothing about racial discrimination faced by the Black population
e) In WWII while he mentioned the segregated US Army and the
discrimination faced by African Americans, he did not mention that Black
Brits faced the same; or that as far as I know none were recruited by the
military. No mention of the workers recruited from the Caribbean; no mention
of the c.35% merchant navy seamen being colonials and Black Brits. Learie
Constantine - yes, but not that he had been living in Nelson, Lancs. and
playing for the Nelson cricket team; that he was working as a Welfare
Officer for the Ministry of Labour to deal with the discrimination faced by
the Black workers. I presume that the two second of film showing him was
from 'Calling the West Indies' program, set up to enable West Indians here
to keep in touch with their relatives. program 'hosted' by Una Marson.
We must not let the BBC get away with this! So please, if all agree, Sean
draft a letter for us to agree.
