Subject: When China Rules the World: Contested Modernities and our Global Future
Dear All,
** 2ND BRISTOL ANNUAL LECTURE IN EAST ASIAN STUDIES **
The consequences of China's emergence as a global power is one of the four
or five really big questions for our contemporary epoch. In the light of
this, CEAS is pleased to announce that the 2nd Bristol Annual Lecture in
East Asian Studies, to be given by Martin Jacques, will be concerned with:
When China Rules the World: Contested Modernities and our Global Future
Date: Monday 22nd February 2010
Time: 4.30-6.00pm, followed by a drinks reception
Venue: Peel Lecture Theatre, School of Geographical Sciences, University of
Bristol, University Road, Bristol. BS8 1SS
Martin Jacques is the author of the controversial study, When China Rules
the World: The Rise of the Middle Kingdom and the End of the Western World
(Allen Lane/Penguin/China Citic 2009). The book has been the subject of
extensive reviews, including by Will Hutton in The Guardian and John Gray
in The New Statesman. It was also the basis for an exchange of views in The
Guardian between Martin Jacques and Will Hutton that posits - and polarises
- many of the key issues about China's rise and its consequences.
Martin Jacques has held appointments at universities in China, Japan,
Singapore and Britain and was formerly editor of the acclaimed magazine,
Marxism Today. He was also Deputy Editor of The Independent.
We anticipate considerable interest in this lecture, and as spaces are
limited, we ask participants to indicate their wish to attend by
emailing: [log in to unmask] Attendance is free of charge.
