I've also found this discussion interesting and I share the general concern
over the way in which email is generally mis-managed in almost all
organisations. In the search for a silver bullet the problem becomes even
bigger and more intractable. We've given up looking for a workable but
purist process. Instead we've focused on persuading our clients to get
email out of the email client and into a shareable environment, using a less
perfect but more effective approach.
The need to do this has been brought home in the case where Sharon
Shoosmith, the sacked Director of Haringey Social Services is suing Ofsted
for damages over their handling of the Baby P case. Ofsted were criticised
by the judge in the trial for failing to deliver all the emails relating to
the case when requested. They insisted that they had submitted everything
as required only to discover that there was a batch of material which had
not been identified because an Ofsted official had been away from the office
at the time the material was being gathered and no-one else had access to
his email account. There must be a better way of dealing with legal
requests of this kind which go beyond 'has any body got any emails relating
to...?'
Incidentally, and call me a pedant if you like, it's 'practising' not
'practicing' what we preach.
