Apologies for cross-postings -
The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge is
hosting a residential research programme entitled "Mathematical and
Statistical Approaches to Climate Modelling and Prediction", from
11th August to 22nd December 2010. The programme aims to bring
together mathematicians, statisticians and climate scientists, to
make progress towards solving some of the major issues currently
facing climate prediction. Specific themes are (a) the development of
improved stochastic sub-grid-scale physics models (b) the use of
statistical techniques to create a theoretically sound basis for
probabilistic climate prediction. A more detailed summary, along with
a list of invited participants who have confirmed their intention to
attend, may be found at
<http://www.newton.ac.uk/programmes/CLP/index.html>http://www.newton.ac.uk/programmes/CLP/index.html.
The organisers would now like to issue an open invitation to
participate, to anybody with expertise that is relevant to the
programme objectives as set out above. Participants will be expected
to stay in Cambridge for a substantial period of time (usually at
least a month in total). Also, because the success of the programme
depends critically upon the exchange of knowledge and information
between different disciplines, it is essential that participants are
able to engage constructively with disciplines and scientific
cultures outside their own area of expertise.
The Newton Institute can provide assistance with accommodation for
participants, as well as some financial support to cover living and
travel expenses. However, the financial resources of the Institute
are limited; participants are therefore asked to try to find at least
partial support from elsewhere towards living costs and travel expenses.
To express an interest in participating, please send an email to
Professor John Huthnance ([log in to unmask]) to arrive no later than
FRIDAY 29TH JANUARY 2010. In your email, please indicate *briefly*
the relevance of your particular expertise to the programme
objectives, and explain your reasons for wanting to participate.
Please also indicate:
. The period(s) during which you would be available to stay in Cambridge
. The level of funding you would need to participate (e.g. "no
funding needed", "full funding required", "some assistance with
accommodation costs")
. Any further requirements that would be necessary for your
stay e.g. accommodation for accompanying persons
Please also attach a brief (no longer than 2 pages) CV, including
details of relevant research activities and publications.
Due to financial and space constraints, it is possible that the
organisers will not be able to accommodate all requests to
participate. Applicants are, however, advised that a series of
workshops will be held as part of the programme (see
<http://www.newton.ac.uk/programmes/CLP/ws.html>http://www.newton.ac.uk/programmes/CLP/ws.html).
These workshops will be open to all, subject to limitations of space.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application as
soon as possible; the organisers aim to respond to all applications
by the middle of February 2010.
To receive updates about the programme and associated workshops,
please sign up to the programme mailing list at
<http://www.newton.ac.uk/programmes/CLP/MailingList.html>http://www.newton.ac.uk/programmes/CLP/MailingList.html.
On behalf of the programme organisers,
Richard Chandler
