Alasdair,
I have been trying to find the answer to this question for some time.
Middle Fell, Musgrave, NY 7776 1833 near the Longfell barytes mine: Middle
Fell, Barras, NY 846 113 known as a colliery but has line of shafts which
look more like lead/barytes. The Westgarth Forster Middle Fell, barytes
mine was occupied by John Slack, which looks like the right one but was said
to be W. of Kirkby Stephen where I can't find a Middle Fell - unless he
meant E! The Barras mine looks the most probable.
Bugle Hill - possibly the hill above Boggle Green in Mallerstang, S of
Outhgill where there is a hush running into Knowes Sike/Thrang Beck at NY
7875 0017 with a shaft at 7872 0022.
Mallerstang Mine - could be any one of many trials but the most likely is at
Far Cote Gill where one of the becks seems to have been called Mallerstang
Beck. Also Far Cote Gill was probably one of the larger/longer running
trials.
There may also be some confusion in the way the Mineral Statistics returns
were completed and Kirkby Stephen could refer to the company's office rather
than the mine location, at least for the non-LLC operations.
Regards
Richard Smith

Subject: Westmorland Mines
Can anyone give locations for any of the following mines, listed in the
Mineral
Statistics etc.?
Middle Fell Mine (1880s-90s)(barytes/iron ore) at first site the mine in
Warcop
with details given by Dunham & with an entry on Aditnow. However the 1883
edition of Westgarth Forster list in the Four Fathom Limestone which would
be
wrong for this site & Mineral Statistics entries also refer to Middle Fell
and
Stainmore, and to a location at Barras. There was a colliery at the latter
site
(also referred to as Middle Fell) but was there any other mining there?
Bugle Hill, Kirkby Stephen (London Lead Co 1870's)
Bayle Hill, Kirkby Stephen (Pease 1866-1871)
I can't find these names on the OS, perhaps misspellings - Bells is a
possibility.
Mallerstang Mine (London Lead Co).
Alasdair Neill.
