We use our own in-house solution called AMACS (Application Monitoring
and Control System). It was originally written back in 2000 and since
then has not seen any development. It has served us well but it is
probably nearing the end of its life and so I have started to look for
an alternative.
SoftGrid / App-V looks to be a good solution especially if you want
common licence control across both traditional PCs and Terminal
Services. However I have been led to understand that the only solution
Microsoft will recognise from a licence compliance point of view is
AppSense Application License Management. Although this is probably less
of an issue in education due to the Campus Agreement.
Ideally I would like a cross-platform solution which will allow central
control of both Windows and Mac licences. I have heard that Sassafras
does support both but that it is rather pricey.
