To Kate:
Many thanks; I remember collecting a really beautiful fish and chip fryer in
the first museum I worked in, namely Salford Museum and Art Gallery in
Greater Manchester, where I worked from 1978 until 1987. I think we went to
Tarporley in Cheshire to get it; I hope it's still in the collections! From
what I remember, I think the tiled background featured a ship 'in full
sail'. I also remember seeing a superb one (although I don't think it was
tiled) in the film "East is East". I don't know whether the chip shop in the
film (which was set in Salford) was an actual one, or whether it was created
as a set and included a fryer brought from elsewhere. I'm sure that you'd be
able to find out the details reasonably easily; the film was released on 5
November 1999 and directed by Damien O'Donnell. Ayub Khan-Din wrote both the
play and the screenplay. If you haven't seen "East is East", do give it a
look if you can. A great film and a great fish and chip fryer!
I also remember a chip shop with a fabulous 'art deco' fryer very close to
Maine Road, the former home of Manchester City Football Club. It might have
been (and still might be!) on Yew Tree Road; I can't be sure as I only used
to visit on a match day as an 'away' fan when they were playing Manchester
United!!
Hope this helps
Best wishes
Jim.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am trying to trace any coal fired or tiled fish and chip fryers that may
be around the country as part of a survey. We have a tiled one, converted
from coal to gas and simple coal one in the collection here. I would
appreciate hearing from anyone who know of one of these gems either in a
collection or even in use!
Thank you,
Kate
