GRAMBLING Grambling State basketball player Henry White died early
Wednesday morning in a Shreveport hospital, 11 days after falling ill
during off-season conditioning drills.
GSU said in a prepared statement a full investigation into the
circumstances that may have contributed to Whites death is ongoing.
The 6-6 junior guard had recently signed with GSU after playing last year
at Hill Junior College in Texas.
Neither the hospital nor the school released any information on the cause
of Whites death.
Swede Trenkle, who coached the Milwaukee, Wis., native, said the criminal
justice major was a tremendous player and person who was known for pushing
himself to the limit.
He was a tremendous kid its a huge shock, Trenkle said. He was the first
one to run and the first one done when we ran sprints. He always lifted
the most weight. Going hard and all out was the only way he knew to do it.
Henry had a heart as big as a house and was in tremendous shape. He never
got out of shape. He pushed himself to the limit all the time 110
percent, that was him.

GRAMBLING The short-lived Ricky Duckett era for Grambling States mens
basketball program has ended.
A release from the university sent out this morning said Duckett has been
placed on administrative leave, effectively immediately, until Oct. 31
when his employment officially ends.
GSUs release added that no other information is available at this time.
The move comes a month after the death of mens basketball player Henry
White, who died Aug. 26 in a Shreveport hospital, 11 days after reportedly
suffering a heat-related illness during off-season conditioning drills
under an assistant coachs supervision.
GSU said in a prepared statement at that time that a full investigation
into the circumstances that may have contributed to Whites death is
ongoing.

Rick Duckett plans to resign as the men's basketball coach from Grambling
State. He will step down in wake of a player's death following a
supervised conditioning workout.
Henry White passed away August 26 in Shreveport, LA. He reportedly fell
ill during a preseason workout August 14.
White's family claims the team was running in 104-degree temperatures
without water.

Grambling State basketball coach Rick Duckett told ESPN.com Saturday night
he didn't resign but was fired.
Duckett was given a letter Friday morning telling him his services were no
longer needed.
Duckett said the firing came as a surprise. It came a month after the
death of junior college transfer Henry White. White died 12 days after
becoming ill during a preseason workout -- a training exercise Duckett
said he did not attend because he was having undisclosed surgery the same
day.
"They didn't give me a reason [for the dismissal]," Duckett said by phone
from his Grambling, La., home. "That's why I have to speculate."
The speculation centers on whether Duckett was fired for cause and whether
he will be paid for the final three years on his contract.

White, 21, got sick during the practice session on Aug. 14 and died on
Aug. 26 at a Shreveport, La., hospital. The Monroe News Star and the
Ruston Daily Leader reported that the university and White's family
attorney are investigating his death.

Last week, WISN-TV in Milwaukee said White's family reported that players
were made to run in 104-degree heat without water.
"We start from a position that it's very troubling that the university was
running these athletes at 2 p.m. in August in Louisiana," said Larry
English, a Shreveport-based attorney representing the family, according to
the News Star.
A deeper look at Henry White's passing

An official report specifying the circumstances surrounding White's death
has not been released.
An SGA statement cited heat stroke as a cause of death.
White arrived at GSU on August 10 and was hospitalized August 14. The
university released a statement saying they're investigating the
"circumstances that may have contributed to White's death".
News station, WISN of Milwaukee, stated that school officials said he was
running with team members and a coach. White collapsed after running four
miles in extreme heat, officials said. Two other players also collapsed,
according to the hometown news station.
White's family attorney said the players should not have been made to run
in such high heat and White's death could have been avoided.
"It is my understanding that there wasn't water, the coaches did not have
water, the young men could not stop and drink. In my mind, under the worse
case scenario, Grambling staff is guilty of negligence for civil
liability. Under worse case scenario, negligent homicide. My statement
speaks for itself," family attorney Larry English stated.

Questions linger for Grambling State

Back in the basement, grief has been replaced by anger. Wood and Johnson
are learning more and more about Aug. 14, the day Henry collapsed while
running on the Grambling State campus. He and six of his teammates were
forced to complete a 4-mile, timed, discipline run in 95-degee Louisiana
heat. Another player also collapsed and was hospitalized after the run.
Three months later, that player is still suffering the effects of heat
exhaustion and still hasn't been cleared to practice. But he's alive.
Twelve days after the run, on Aug. 26, White died as a result of
complications from heat exhaustion, his liver and kidneys ravaged to the
point of total failure. It's not the heat, though, that has Wood and
Johnson growing increasingly agitated. They're hearing what a two-month
"Outside the Lines" investigation has revealed, and they've come to
believe the run that killed their son never should have happened.
There were myriad problems on Grambling State's end:
The run apparently was an NCAA violation, coming three days before
classes started at Grambling State. NCAA Bylaw 17.3.2.1 states that
supervised conditioning or fitness activities for basketball "shall not
begin prior to the beginning of the institution's academic year," which
the NCAA defines as the first day of classes.
White did not have personal medical insurance and had not been signed on
to Grambling State's policy, a violation of school protocol, according to
athletic director J. Lin Dawson. A June 22 memo written by athletic
trainer Jessica Robinson indicates all athletes "MUST have insurance on
file before they can work out, practice, and compete in any competition."
And a school checklist reveals White was uninsured. White's medical bills
have reached more than $275,000, certain to become part of an expected
wrongful death lawsuit filed by his mother.
Robinson, the trainer, had not cleared the team to work out, nor was she
aware of the run, also a breach of school policy, according to Dawson.
<snip>
White's registration hadn't been fully processed at the time of the run.
A document obtained by "Outside the Lines" shows his registration wasn't
stamped completed until Aug. 20 -- as he lay in a hospital bed in
Shreveport, La., one week after the run.
