************** my apologies for cross postings ***************
A PhD position (funded by DFG) up to three years is available in the laser
molecular spectroscopy and environmental physics group of Prof. Otto Dopfer
at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany.
The predominantly experimental research involves
spectroscopic, mass spectrometric, and quantum chemical investigations
of charged aromatic molecular complexes and clusters in the
gas phase, with strong relevance to a broad range of interdisciplinary
topics ranging from biophysics to astrochemistry, including:
(1) Intermolecular interactions, potential energy surfaces, microsolvation
processes
(2) Organic chemical reaction mechanisms (e.g., proton transfer,
substitution reactions)
(3) Chemistry of planetary atmospheres and astrophysical media
(4) Combustion processes and production of soot
(5) Hydrocarbon plasma chemistry
(6) Molecular recognition of biological molecules
(7) Proton transfer, proton wire, proton transport
Available equipment includes IR and UV lasers, several ion sources
and rf-traps, as well as several types of mass spectrometers.
In addition to modern laser spectroscopic and mass spectrometric equipment
at TU Berlin, the group is actively involved in strong international
collaborations with groups in
Rome, Paris, Tokio, and Manchester in order to use world-wide unique
equipment, such as free electron and ultrafast lasers.
Qualified candidates should hold a degree in Physics, Chemistry, or related
fields. Experience in several of the following fields is advantageous:
(1) laser spectroscopy
(2) mass spectrometry
(3) ion sources (EI, CI, MALDI, ESI)
(4) ion traps
(5) vacuum physics
(6) molecular beams
(7) cluster science
(8) data acquisition
(9) construction of apparatus
Interested and highly qualified candidates are encouraged to send their
application to Prof. Otto Dopfer ([log in to unmask]), including a
cover letter, a CV (including list of publications), a statement of
qualifications relevant for the position (max. 1 page), a statement of
research interests
(max. 1 page) as well as names and complete addresses of two referees. The
evaluation of the applications will begin at December 15 (2009) and will
continue until the position is filled. The desired starting date is as soon
as possible (negotiable).
