CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Outer Planet Magnetotails
EGU Vienna, 2 - 7 May 2010
Magnetotails are important sites for the storage and explosive release of energy, and contribute to the global energy, magnetic flux and mass transport in planetary magnetospheres. We now have a wealth of data on outer planet magnetospheres, provided by missions such as Pioneer, Voyager, Galileo, Cassini and New Horizons, as well as by remote Hubble Space Telescope auroral observations, and are able to pose and answer important questions regarding the structure and dynamics of these important plasma regions.
For this session we invite oral and poster contributions on the structure and dynamics of magnetotails in outer planet magnetospheres. Theoretical, observational and modelling studies are welcomed. We envisage discussion of periodic phenomena in magnetotails and their links to global magnetospheric periodicities. Comparisons of outer planet magnetotail processes with those at the terrestrial planets (e.g. comparative reconnection studies) are also welcome.
