Real Challenges in a Virtual World
Call for papers to present a Breakout Session at the 2010 UKSG
Conference and Exhibition
What happens when you go online? Tell us the way you see it - warts and
all!
The UKSG Annual Conference attracts delegates from across the
information industry, from publishers and intermediaries to librarians.
We are looking for a current student to give an original and personal
perspective on the challenges of information provision in the virtual
world. Where do you go online to get the information that you need? Do
you tweet or blog to find that essential fact? Are you pleased to see a
Librarian avatar in Second Life? How do you judge the quality of the
information that you come across? What hinders your activities in the
virtual world? Are webinars and podcasts a useful way to learn? Do you
consider social networks to be a legitimate source of information for
study? What are the best things online and what are your pet hates?
UKSG would like to invite papers from interested undergraduate,
postgraduate or research students on UK/Irish Library and Information
Studies and/or Publishing Courses.
The winning entrant will be invited to give his/her paper as a breakout
session at the 33rd Annual UKSG Conference and Exhibition, held 12th -
14th April at Edinburgh International Conference Centre, situated at the
heart of Scotland's beautiful capital city. The breakout session will
run on Tuesday and Wednesday, and will typically attract up to 40
delegates each time.
The winning entrant will also receive:
- A residential place for the 2010 UKSG Conference and Exhibition
including reasonable travel expenses.
- Publication of your paper in "Serials" - the paper will be made open
access on publication.
- A free place on a presentation skills course, as well as a further
prize presented at the conference, both underwritten by the UKSG
Conference Sponsors.
All entries should be e-mailed to Kate Price, Chair of the UKSG
Education Sub-committee ([log in to unmask]), by Friday 11th
December 2009.
Submission criteria
Entrants should submit 500 words outlining the presentation entitled
"Real Challenges in a Virtual World". Entries will be judged by a panel
of UKSG Education Sub-committee members (see
http://www.uksg.org/committees )
