Hello everyone,
I am a graduate student in the Master of Information, Library and
Information Science Path at the University of Toronto. In the course
of doing research, I stumbled across this great mailing list.
If anyone has a moment, I'd really appreciate any help in finding some
references for a paper.
In order to investigate the issues raised in INF1001 around issues of
"open access" and "copyright" for that course's last paper, I have
chosen to look at the rise of independent e-publishing and what roles
libraries should play in providing access to those works. For
example, if novels are available for free online because the author
relies on the revenue from website traffic, is it enough that
libraries allow users to access them through computer terminals or
should they actively make users aware where such sources are
available? Should libraries purchase books from independent
publishers? If so, would the criteria for evaluating which books
should be purchased differ from traditional practice (ie how do blog
reviews compare to book reviews in official publications?)
If you have any suggestions for useful articles or books on this
subject, I would be extremely grateful!
Thanks!
Amanda
