Dear colleagues,
In the context of increasingly squeezed budgets and REF developments (e.g.
the possible double-weighting of monographs), the issue of book subsidies
becomes more acute.
What policies and funding schemes are in place in our Departments /Schools/
Faculties regarding the payment of publishing subsidies (for the production
of monographs or other outputs)?
1. Are academics generally supported (in whole or in part) by their
institutions? Or, do institutions expect their staff to be 'financially
independent' in relation to their publisher?
2. How widespread is the 'subsidy' phenomenon among academic publishers in
our field and in cognate fields? Is it rare/quite common/very common?
3. Are colleagues in MLs more affected than colleagues in anglophone
studies, history etc by this issue?
I would be very grateful to hear directly from colleagues with their views.
If there are sufficient replies, I will summarise these.
Many thanks in anticipation, and best wishes.
nils
