The easiest solution is a German keyboard. I will never understand why anyone working in several languages should choose an English keyboard. The German one can handle French and Irish and my guess is many other European languages much easier than the English keyboard. And of course the German keyboard supports English as well without any difficulties. It costs about EUR20 incl. postage.
Best wishes

The easiest way seems to assign a shortcut for each letter which you
select as a symbol (Insert - symbol - create shortcut), e.g. ctrl + s
for scharfes s, ctrl + a fur umlaut a, ctrl + shift + a for A Umlaut
etc. This has worked with all systems so far including VISTA.
Best wishes,
Annette
