Topic title: "History of Seismic Isolation"
Abstract:
The concept of isolating structures form earthquakes, and hence protecting
them and their contents, is introduced in a historical context, viewing each
disastrous earthquake as providing an impetus for incremental advance in
earthquake engineering.
Isolation is viewed as a natural solution to the problem of protection following
the appreciation of the dynamics of earthquake interaction with structures in
the 1950s.
The history of engineering applications of rubber gives another thread to the
presentation, leading to the first use of rubber isolation bearings in the
Elementary School "Pestalozzi" in Macedonia, following the Skopje earthquake
of 1966, and on to the current rapid growth in the use of rubber-steel
laminated isolation bearings, in response to evidence of efficacy in the
Northridge (1994) and Kobe (1995) earthquakes.
Please forward this to any other colleagues who may be interested.
Kind regards,
Bhupinder
