I was dismayed by the efforts of the artists on the Saatchi programme during
the life drawing exercise, they clearly didn't have any experience which was
reinforced by Matthew Collings comment that 'life drawing isn't taught
anymore'.
I don't agree with that statement as I have had the benefit of excellent
drawing training throughout the foundation and BA Fine Art Painting courses
at City and Guilds of London Art School where drawing in all its aspects is
seen as crucial for both thinking and creating.
The majority of the artists interviewed during the programme seemed to be
those that were relying on concepts rather than traditional craft skills,
which I found bizarre given that Saatchi himself collects painting and
sculpture.
Is Matthew Collings right? And if so what will the effect be on the art
produced in the future?
