Hi
I've been collaborating 'remotely' for a number of years now - there are
so many ways to do this, some better than others. I definitely recommend
trying it out as the results can be very interesting - up until now I
found skype the most productive programme to use, as it facilitates
immediate response via the chat/send file/phone function.
You can also set up group conferences which is useful if you are a
larger group and needing to discuss a process. I tried to use a wiki
page with a colleague, also 'google docs' (we were setting up a kind of
workshop however, I don't know if that's so useful for visual art
collaborations) - however I found that a bit awkward and not very
spontaneous. Also they demanded too much know-how. Email or skype are
good places to start I think. Another useful thing about skype is that
any chats you have are saved within the programme and can be reviewed,
though if there are important points during a discussion it would be
wise to copy and paste these into a document as they happen.
It might be good to try to use just one programme at first for the image
files - just decide on one amongst yourselves and explore the
possibilities there. This can have a positive effect on the process I
think; I worked on a music/art project where we limited ourselves to
using one programme that neither of us knew particularly well - this
became an intrinsic factor in our collaboration and allowed for some
really funny results.
Anyway best of luck, hope this was helpful in some way.
