Subject: Public Policy Exchange: Tackling Sickness Absenteeism in the Workplace - 26th January 2010
Dear Colleague,
I enclose details of the forthcoming Public Policy Exchange symposium, entitled From <http://publicpolicyexchange.co.uk/events/AA26-PPE.php> 'Sick Note' to 'Fit Note': Tackling Sickness Absenteeism in the Workplace, which will take place on Tuesday 26th January 2010 at One Birdcage Walk, Westminster, London.
Over the last five years, the Government has sought to address the problem of sickness absenteeism which results in 172 million lost working days every year, costing businesses around £13bn annually. To achieve the goal of creating healthier workforces and workplaces, several reports were commissioned culminating in 2008 with Dame Carol Black's Review of the health of Britain's working age population - the first of its kind.
In 2009, the Government took steps to implement one of Carol Black's key recommendations - the replacement of the current 'sick note' with a 'fit note', where the focus would shift from what an employee cannot do to what they can do. With the new proposals having recently been subject to a statutory consultation process, this special Public Policy Exchange symposium, hosted by the Centre for Parliamentary Studies, offers a timely opportunity for employers, HR/occupational health professionals and other stakeholders to examine the Government's plans, consider their practical implementation and discuss their potential contribution to shaping a healthier workforce and more efficient workplace.

Kind regards,
Elizabeth Jones
