Don't be fooled by your nose because its a highly devloped sensitive bit of kit but can give you misleading correlations between odour and what the concrntrations are this is especially true where HC are aged, wethered and biodegraded. You would be surprised at the sensitivity of the olfactory senses and what you consider a problem is risk free when you do the dqra on each of the fractions. Get the lab to check their QA and rerun the sample. I've experienced this before a few times.

Yep - foundry sand is coated in a phenolic resin in order to make the casting moulds.
