‘ILEA: Memories and Legacy’ Friends of the Newsam Library and Archives study

This free event marks the 20th anniversary of the abolition of the Inner
London Education Authority (ILEA), the local education authority for inner
London, 1965-1990, which introduced experimental approaches to state
education and adopted a culturally pluralist approach towards minority groups
within its jurisdiction.
Held at the Institute of Education, University of London, (IOE) on the 21st
January 2010 by the Friends of the Newsam Library and Archives (FNLA), this
event will look back at the work of the ILEA through the eyes of its former
employees. It will also feature a talk on the collections held by the Newsam
Library and Archives relating to the ILEA.
Speakers at the event include Sir Peter Newsam, former Chief Education
Officer for the ILEA; Barbara MacGilchrist, former ILEA Chief Inspector; Gene
Adams, former ILEA Museums Education Advisor; Leisha Fullick, former ILEA
Staff Inspector for Further and Higher Education and currently Visiting
Professor at the IOE; and Professor Jane Martin, Professor in Social History of
Education at the IOE.
The Newsam Library and Archives at the IOE, is one of the largest libraries in
Europe dedicated to collecting publications relating to all aspects of
education. The collections in the Library’s Archives and Special Collections
reflect the development of education in the UK from the 17th century to
present day and are a unique research sources for the history of education.
The FNLA is a registered charity which supports the future development of
Institute's library and archive collections as a unique resource for research in
education. Members of the FNLA are guaranteed places at the event.
