Postdoctoral Fellow – Statistician – Team 149
Salary £28000 to £34433pa dependent on experience.
Statistical analyses to identify disease-causing genetic variants
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research,
with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene
function in health & disease.
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI) is a world leader in genomic
research and has played a major role in sequencing the human genome and
characterising patterns of human sequence variation. Applications are
invited for a postdoctoral fellow to join the Genetic Epidemiology Group at
WTSI. The successful candidate will be involved in the design and analysis
of large scale genomic epidemiological studies. Specifically, the successful
candidate will be involved in developing statistical approaches to examine
data generated by new DNA sequencing technologies, including analyses of
sequence functionality and rare and common genetic variants in the context
of complex diseases and traits.
There is a strong commitment to personal and professional development with
the group, and the successful applicant will be encouraged to develop their
own ideas and build-up a strong academic profile.
Essential Skills
Applicants will have a numerate first degree (natural/biological sciences,
maths or statistics) and a PhD in genetic epidemiology, statistics,
bioinformatics, computational biology or a related discipline.
The successful candidate will have expertise in high throughput data
manipulation, analysis and visualisation using relevant statistical packages
(R) and programming languages (Perl or C). It is also essential that the
candidate has clear communication skills with the ability to present
methodologies and results succinctly and the ability to work within a team.
Ideal Skills
Experience of analysis and handling large data sets, including genomic data,
additional languages, and proficiency in the use of relational databases
would be desirable. Familiarity with Linux network/server administration
would also be an advantage.
