No
Yes, but no
We feel that it is impossible to do this, and not desirable. We try to
encourage a whole host of web 2.0 applications in the university and
beyond. In addition we encourage the use of face book groups in terms of
communicating with library users, students, academics and professional
colleagues. We also found that many students who were "on facebook" were
also on other applications at the same time including le0library,
networked MS Office etc.
In my view banning Facebook is akin to banning e-mail because so many
use it to email friends and relatives...!
One of our responses is similar to others - an increasing sue of laptop
loans and supporting space and facilities to reduce the dependence on
fixed PCs as the sole use of PCs in the library

Subject: Facebook use banned in your HE library?
A very quick straw poll if I may (will summarise for the list).
* Has Facebook use been banned or restricted in some way in your
HE library/learning centre?
* If no, has it ever been suggested? Or are you considering it?
* If yes, has it caused any problems or negative reactions?
* Feel free to expand on your answers!
The query arises as a result of a suggestion coming, I believe from our
Student Union, that the Library be made a 'Facebook free zone' - a
suggestion I'm not entirely comfortable with, and it would be really
useful to get a sense of where other HE libraries/learning centres stand
on this issue (if indeed it is an issue for you).
Thank you for any responses (direct to me please).
