Subject: Re: Facebook use banned in your HE library?
Facebook not banned, no, but our website's list of prohibitions
http://www.haddon.archanth.cam.ac.uk/about/rules.html does include this
one against "Recreational use of computer terminals, where this prevents
their use for catalogue searches and other academic-related purposes".
In practice, that means that we don't bother w. what we can see people
doing w. the public-access terminals, unless we also see someone waiting
to use them. If someone's waiting, we ask them what they're waiting to
do. If it's an academic-related thing, & if the terminal's being used
for
sth. more frivolous, then we ask the frivolous user to make way.
That's the theory, anyhow, and I do remember doing it sometimes. But
usually when I'm passing the terminals I'm in a tearing hurry to be
somewhere else. Also, last year's introduction of wireless broadband
means people can use their own laptops in the library, which reduces
pressure on the terminals somewhat.
All the best
Aidan
