To celebrate the completed cataloguing of the Howell Collection at Bishopsgate Library, we have created, "Victorian Social and Political Reform: Howell Collection Online Exhibition". Available via our website<http://www.bishopsgate.org.uk/content.asp?CategoryID=1405>, the exhibition highlights some of the major subject areas covered in this important collection. Consisting of 6,500 books and pamphlets, the Howell Collection is very strong in its coverage of Victorian social, economic and political reform, the chief issues that concerned George Howell during his career as a trade unionist, journalist, and MP. The exhibition includes examples of pamphlets and books from the collection that illustrate the kind of material that is available in the library. Subjects covered range from campaigns for women's suffrage to the Irish Home Rule debate to financial reform.
Electronic cataloguing of the renowned Howell Collection was completed this summer. This collection, deposited at the Library in 1905, is the personal library of George Howell (1833-1910), politician, journalist and trade union activist. More information about the collection can be found on our website here<http://www.bishopsgate.org.uk/content.asp?CategoryID=1028%20>, and the catalogue records can be searched through our online catalogue<http://bishopsgate.org.uk/catalogue>.
