The hypertext documentation does use typography to discriminate between
actual defaults and descriptions of the default like "current value".
The literal values are in teletype fount. Sometimes the descriptions
are too long for the [] syntax, say if the default depends on another
parameter's value, and are therefore explained in the parameter
description (cf. PARAMS(2)).
To add to what David said, you can use the reset keyword in the command
line
% wcsmosaic <various parameters> reset
to lose the current values and parameters will either be set to an
initial default or prompted for if there's no initial default.
Another useful special keyword is prompt. If you append that to the
command you'll be prompted for all the parameters. When you reach
METHOD the current default will appear at the end of the prompt between

then you can enter a different value if you prefer or return to accept
the current value. To skip over subsequent prompts for defaulted

so it skips over PARAMS, ACC, WLIM, MAXPIX, and GENVAR. The \ means
accept, another one of the special command-line keywords.

The METHOD description doesn't say that and it should.
