*Discursive Boundaries within a Mental Health
Service-User/Survivor Theoretical Standpoint*/
/*

*Abstract:
*
For people with mental health problems, development of theoretical
standpoint methodology would assist in highlighting the scientific
value of their experiential knowledge, much of which probably still
is classified as 'irrational'. Foucault, himself an ex-service-user
and survivor, identified such knowledge as the exact opposite of
'reason' in Enlightenment thinking, and therefore not accorded value
(1989/1961:116). Standpoint theories for user/survivors are
problematic, however, because there are only two experiences common
to all service-user/survivors. These are first, the individual
experience of severe mental distress; and second, the experience of
being socially-constructed in dominant discourses. For instance,
these discourses portray user/survivors as embodying the latter in
the following dualisms: reason/unreason; sane/insane;
normal/abnormal; responsible/irresponsible; healthy/sick;
self-controlled/dangerous; and, productive/unproductive. This paper
asserts the development of a Service-User/Survivor Standpoint
Methodology, such as the one outlined for the presenter's PhD thesis
(Armes, 2006), must address the social-construction of
service-user/survivors. This is because the oppression
ofservice-user/survivors through discursive means, is common to all
service-user/survivors, and as such is also a potential rallying
point for unified resistance.
