We are pleased to announce that Edge Hill University in the North West
will host a Chinese Language and Culture Day on Thursday 10th December
2009. You are very welcome to bring school children to this
free-of-charge taster workshop.
"Hello China: Chinese Language and Culture Day" is designed as a taster
course in Chinese language and culture for school children interested in
China, the Chinese language and culture. The day starts at 12pm and
finishes at 3pm, including a campus tour.
The workshop comprises two 1-hour sessions, with a 30-minute break (with
Chinese tea) in between. The first session will be a brief introduction
to China and an exploration of Chinese culture; the second session will
teach some basic expressions in Mandarin Chinese for greeting, thanking,
apology, and goodbye as well as responses for spoken communication. Both
sessions will be interactive and also involve the use of multimedia
materials.
Session 1 (one hour) First impression of China: Exploring Chinese
culture
Key points covered: picture and map activities, fun facts about China, a
very brief history of China, the Chinese national flag, 3-minute video
clip showing general information about China, components of Chinese
culture, traditional festivals, traditional folk arts, Chinese
architecture, Chinese food, religion and philosophy, 3-minute video of
the Great Wall, Chinese culture and etiquette, “dos and don’ts” in
dealing with Chinese
Break (half an hour, with Chinese tea)
Session 2 (one hour) First encounter with Mandarin Chinese: Hello China!
Key points covered: some facts about Mandarin Chinese, Chinese writing,
is Chinese difficult to learn, Pinyin and tones, Chinese characters or
Pinyin, counting to 10, counting to 99, number game, fascinating Chinese
characters, a Chinese song, video clips of greetings in Chinese, pair
work and group work, more simple Chinese expressions
