Towards a New Europe Part One: The Writing on the Wall Twenty years ago,
the sudden and dramatic dismantling of the Berlin Wall, that most potent
symbol of the post-war split between East and West, marked a major
historical turning point. BFI Southbank presents a three-part season
that explores European identity, looking at how Europe arrived at its
present state and stimulating reflection on its future.
The range of films includes documentaries, fiction and comedy from
countries as diverse as Romania to Belgium, from Finland to Serbia.

At BFI Southbank in September we celebrate the transgressive works of
the great Japanese filmmaker Nagisa Oshima in the first part our two
month retrospective including an extended run of In the Realm of the
Senses; we examine the turbulent history of the British coal industry
through King Coal; we place Spike Lee's seminal film Do The Right Thing
in context 20 years after its release; we take a peek at the tease and
sleaze of Sexploitation cinema; and we examine plays that have
successfully crossed over into TV in the final part of From Stage to TV
Screen. In the Mediatheque we dig deeper into Britain's mining history
with a new collection which forms part of the King Coal project and
Simon Faithfull's Gravity Sucks continues to defy natural law in the
Gallery till 20 Sept. At the BFI IMAX, food falls from the skies in the
new 3D animation Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs from 18 Sept.
