Dear Colleagues
As you may be aware, the ESRC has recently announced its plans to establish a
national network of Doctoral Training Centres (DTCs) and Doctoral
Training Units (DTUs). The primary purpose of the new framework is to
further enhance provision for postgraduate training in the UK by
building upon the considerable strengths that already exist across the
social science research base.
Further information on the framework can be found at the following website:
http://www.esrcsocietytoday.ac.uk/ESRCInfoCentre/opportunities/postgraduate/training/framework/ESRC_Accreditiation_Exercise.aspx
and

A call for applications for accreditation as DTCs or DTUs was launched
earlier this month and applications will be subject to a two stage
peer review process. Applications will first be assessed by a
specially constituted peer review college and the final decisions on
the establishment of DTC and DTU system will rest with the ESRC
committee with responsibility for postgraduate training and development.
The Social Policy Association has been invited to nominate up to three
people as potential members of this college (please note that
nomination does not guarantee membership). The ESRC anticipate that
the college will have around 50 members and they will seek to ensure
that the membership has an appropriate balance of expertise, gender
and regional coverage. As such, the final composition of the college
will be subject to approval by the ESRC Training and Development Board.
Potential college members would need to demonstrate a broad social
science view and have a background in the provision of high quality
postgraduate research training. Panel members will be expected to
provide an assessment of the training environment and provision across
the DTC and DTU applications. The ESRC will be running a workshop for
referees in late February 2010 and members will be expected to attend.
The exact date of the workshop will be confirmed on the ESRC website
shortly. Panel members will need to be available to assess
applications between mid April and mid May 2010.
If you are interested in being considered as one of the three nominees
put forward by the SPA please initially contact me, Tess Ridge
([log in to unmask]) and I will send you a proforma to fill in and
ask you for a two page CV. Each nominee will be considered by the SPA
Executive who will assess the nominations, according to ESRC
guidelines. Chosen candidates will then be put forward with a
covering letter for consideration by the ESRC.
There is a very tight timetable for this process and candidates are
urged to contact me by 12th October to be sent the proforma and they
will need to return the completed proforma and 2 page CV by email
before the end of the day on 14th October.
Best wishes
Tess Ridge
