If the point of singularity or 'oneness' lies in ideas of unity,
Bishop Ridley spoke out against the Catholic Mass on the grounds that
it was 'not a sacrament of unity but of singularity' (Parker Soc. 39,
p. 123). The common emphasis on singularity and division vs. unity in
Protestant polemic would suggest that the holiness-wholeness pun would
have been on Spenser's mind. (As well as the difference between the
Mass as ritual singularity vs unity, the 'one flesh' of marriage vs.
the 'singularity' of virginity seems important for Spenserian
holiness, though many might disagree). But sorry, this still doesn't
answer your actual question about criticism on the subject.
