Sorry - I seem to have started somewhat of a cascade effect!  

As a suggestion for a topic, once of my biggest challenges is determining retention periods for documents.  From the emails I've seen today / yesterday, the RMS-North group seems to be mainly made up of public sector organizations - I work for a private company manufacturing medical devices, so not sure we are governed by the same standards.

Just to throw in the lawyers' perspective - it's an obvious point, but
the internal business case for staying with the paper system (at least
medium term) can be improved greatly by destroying paper records that do
not need to be retained any longer (vis statutory retention periods
etc). If in doubt, particular historical paper records can be scanned
pre destruction, which vastly reduces any legal risk re destruction.
Quite often retention/destruction policies need reviewing, as large
volumes of paper records are being kept for longer than necessary. The
storage savings (space/cost) coming out of this type of project are
tangible.  We're currently advising a central government department on
the legal issues to be thinking about when carrying out this type of
project. Happy to help others.

being a records manager in a pct, all of the rich clinical data is held
in paper format and only a minimal amount of data is beginning to be
coded via snomed coding. If you take the gp example we are many years
away from eprs and we will have a lot of paper records to manage
retrospectively until we have systems mature enough to code and
summarise and thus edms will play a role now and in the future. I like
all of you have the same issues around storage, archive and access Rob

No you are not the only one with paper records; I am paper based and
also retain documents in Storage Boxes.

I do believe that Paper will never go out of fashion no matter what the
technology out there can do!!

I also use my Brain as my computer for data storage rather than the
computer as it is less likely to crash and burn?

So for those of us out here that still use a Mangle to dry clothes off,
can we still offer the Paper Based Record Managers a slice of the cake
without the need to turn all 21st Century.

Everyone seems to be on a very different page to me - I feel light years
behind as most of my records are stored in boxes, not electronically.
Am I the only one out there with paper records????

Just wondered if people would be willing to come forward with any
burning ideas for our quarterly meetings next year?

Something I am mulling over is a day dedicated to Knowledge
Management/Information Management so we could have a clearer idea about
what they are about and how they interrelate [or not] with records
management.

Another idea is taking a look at what records managers do and what it is

perceived that we do possibly with a facilitator to challenge some of
our ideas and take us out of our comfort zones.


What other ideas are out there?
