I am writing on behalf of the PPP SIG Steering Group to canvass your
views.

As you may recall, PPP SIG was established in December 2007 with the
purpose of exploring the sustainability of a special interest group and
community of practitioners in educational podcasting. Our principal
focal point has always been on pedagogy, and this will continue to be
the case. We have been fortunate in obtaining funding (HEA Microgrant)
to provide some support for continuing our activities. To date, the
success of PPP SIG is illustrated by the size of the membership (over
350), and the well attended dissemination and development activities in
England and Scotland (and, soon, in Northern Ireland and Wales).

As a Steering Group we have always ensured that the remit and scope of
PPP SIG have been kept under review, as well as the designation itself -
‘PPP SIG’. We have come to the view that it may be timely for us all
to consider a re-designation and so we are seeking your opinions.
Briefly, perhaps ‘podcasting’ doesn’t now reflect where we are, as
a SIG, or where the HE and FE sectors are in the area of media enhanced
learning. Given that pedagogic activity is now focused on audio, video,
screen casts, animation etc, then perhaps we need a broader and more
generic ‘branding’ to better reflect the changes in the SIG’s
focus, and recent discussions in the wider community of technology
enhanced learning and teaching.

We are proposing a change to ‘Media Enhanced Learning Special
Interest Group’, abbreviated to MEL SIG. We’d very much value your
views on this. If you could do this in time for the 11th November event
at Bath that would be most helpful. Please post your views to the SIG
wiki at http://ppp.chester.ac.uk/index.php?title=Talk:Main_Page, or
email them to Carol Beattie Comer at [log in to unmask]

Thanks and best wishes

Jethro Newton

(On behalf of the PPP SIG Steering Group)

Regards
Carol
