Abstract
Barriers to Successful Practice Development: Findings from an Ethnographic Study
The number of healthcare provider groups undertaking practice development accreditation with Bournemouth University and other HEI's is growing rapidly as it is praised for transforming cultures of health care, inciting empowerment, instigating multidisciplinary teamwork and creating more effective services.
The literature is vague on what occurs during accreditation, the role of culture within this process and the experiences of different professional groups in practice development. These issues were explored through a 12 month ethnographic research project, following one group's accreditation journey.
The accreditation attempt was unsuccessful due to cultural differences and leadership problems resulting in participants unable to overcome divides based on hierarchy and professional identities to work as part of a multidisciplinary team in order to implement practice development.
This presentation will explore these issues in detail, offering a non-healthcare insight into practice and offer recommendations for instigating change in general based on the findings of this research.
