medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Just in case you didn't know:
A film called 'Barbarossa' has just been released in Italy. It cost
thirty million euros to make: 40% of the funding came from Italy's
state broadcaster RAI (ultimately controlled by the government, now
headed by Silvio Berlusconi), and 10% of the funding came from the
Ministry of Culture (directly controlled by Berlusconi's government).
You can see a trailer here:

It must rank (or, as Python's Pontius Pilate in 'Life of Brian' would
say, 'wank') very high as the worst in propaganda in 'historical'
films. This movie is blatantly in support of the mythology of the
racist Northern League, an important member of Berlusconi's governing
coalition. In a nutshell, the film purports to tell of an unshakeable
longing for liberty on the part of the good people of Milan and of
Padania (= the Po Valley, imbued by the Northern League as with the
spirit of an ancestral homeland) against foreign (= non-Padanian)
forces.
It is reported at
http://www.cineblog.it/post/19085/barbarossa-il-fotogramma-del-cameo-
di-bossi
that a man by the name of Umberto Bossi has a cameo appearance in
this movie; Umberto Bossi is the leader of the Northern League.
At http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm1qo-aArms you can see a brief
comparison between 'Barbarossa' and 'Braveheart' (featuring William
Wallace speaking perfect Italian).
