medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Jeffrey,
Relic processions were often organized in time of drought (and from the
late Middle Ages, processions of miraculous images). These were formal
affairs, but I really don't know what level of liturgical formalization
was involved. The "grande procession" at Chartres, though, had a fixed
route, from the cathedral, out to the monastery of Josaphat, maybe 10 km
outside of town, stopping en route as several monasteries and other
churches. A mass was celebrated at Josaphat, and then they returned. I
assume that these would have been grand affairs, with lots of people,
but detailed descriptions only survive from the 17th century.
Cheers,
Jim
