This is pretty much the situation we're in. We are moving to a different
system though that will be using plain numerical dates, so...

...yes, it's trivial to alter the display for the front end, and
similarly to run semantic searches on purely numerical data; one just
needs to define a set of rules, so that when someone searches for '18th
century' the system hears 'between 1700 and 1799, inclusive' and so on.
