For readers of this list who are members of ALPSP, there is a short
guide to do's and don't about journal title changes on the website
(sorry, restricted to members only) "Journal Title Changes" (look
under "Research and publications" it is one of the Advice notes) -
however it was written a few years ago (2002), so may be a little out
of date.

> Title changes are an accepted practice of journal management, but yes, confusion can be caused especially when it comes to e-content, for example if all issues regardless of previous title are listed on your website under the new title. In print terms there are logistic issues relating to shelving, acquisition, and delivery (where do you put the title, do you recognise it when it arrives as being a continuation of the previous title?)
>
> I wouldn't say it was disruptive if managed correctly - get the ISSN changed, inform customers and subscription agents of the change, display it in a helpful way on the website. Title changes which do cause the most confusion are those which sometimes just acquire or lose one word which doesn't really change the title as such at all.

> One of our society journals would like to change its title. We are not in favour of this, partly because we think the current title is good, but more importantly we are concerned that a title change will cause confusion amongst our library subscriber base. Of course we would notify subscribers in advance, but we nevertheless feel a change is bound to be disruptive.
>
> I would very much appreciate any feedback from list members as to the impact of journal title changes on library systems. If it is the case that a properly managed change is not disruptive, we can be more positive about the new title. However, if it is at all problematic, it would be helpful for us to convey the likely ramifications to our society partner.
