We were using Foxit for quite a while (and I use it at home). Mainly
because loading is faster than Acrobat - like so much software Acrobat
seems to add features with every upgrade. Features that make it slower
to use. So we tried Foxit and when I surveyed the speed it was 30%
faster than Acrobat.
In using Foxit we never had any problem with PDFs on the Internet.
Everything always opened smoothly (and relatively quickly).
The reason we changed back to Acrobat was because of an incompatibility
with compressed files. Our new scanner makes HUGE files so we have to
default to compressed format to enable us to email them, and Foxit can't
cope with compressed PDF files. So the only answer for us was to
reluctantly go back to Acrobat.
I know this isn't answering the original question but I thought it might
give understanding to those who didn't see why people would choose other
PDF readers.
And for the first question, we do use some Science Direct journals and
Foxit was never a problem for them. So maybe Nuance had a problem there
rather than Science Direct not liking non-Acrobat products.

Hi Sarah,
You may see a security warning (esp. if using Windows Vista), but I got
a PDF to open using Foxit, so other PDF readers should work too.
Best wishes,
Dom

Subject: [LIS-E-RESOURCES] PDFs articles for those without Adobe Reader
Hi all,
Apologies for this slightly strange question.
We've discovered a bit of an issue just now with a colleague who has
something called Nuance PDF Reader who has been trying to download
articles from ScienceDirect - he just couldn't. I've checked their
system requirements, and it seems they only support Adobe Reader, so
that anyone who is using something else like my colleague, will come a
bit unstuck!
I must say this is all news to me - perhaps I'm missing something - but
it does occurr to me that this is a bit of a problem, and wondered if
anyone knew of any other platforms where this might be the case? I
imagine there must be a fair few potential users out there using open
source PDF readers for example and I just cannot believe that they would
also come unstuck! I know it's not a big problem to actually download
Adobe Reader, buy some either can't (my colleague, for example, can't as
Nuance PDF is now his un-defaultable default!) or won't, and it does
seems a little wrong.
Any pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!
Best wishes,
Sarah
