But it's often what's not in the lonely planet guide that really draws
us in....

I can relate to this. Before travelling to an exciting new country I
read the relevant 'Lonely Planet' guide. I can't remember even a
fraction of what I have read in the book. However...when I get back
from the travels I am so full of experiences, memories, emotions,
sights, sounds and feelings that I have enough in my head to write a
book thicker than 5 Lonely planets. I have to get out there and live
it to learn it. While we are all unique, I bet we have this in common
too.

creativity works I believe because it is a journey, a process. As
creative people our curiosity is aroused by ideas or objects that catch
our attention, we start to get involved and engaged with tryng to
understand what we are feeling, seeing or hearing and use our
engagement to try out new patterns and processes, eventually making
something that transforms actions, materials, ideas, sounds into
something new. It is an ongoing process and it is what keeps us
evolving and growing. Public Artist Robert Irwin, defined this
creative process some time ago now, sorry I haven't got the reference
with me, but in one of his exhibition catalogues, he defines the
process from Art Goals to social change. I am sure you can find his
work through Google.

Not sure how I ended up in this conversation - but, lovely it is!
Marie, I did an assembly on this yesterday - about a girl who met a
goblin and gave her a choice as to whether to go to Goblin city the
short way or the long way with the view and then I linked it to Frost's
poem where he talks about one way leading on to another - which is just
what life (and learning) is like!!!
I suppose the wya less travelled has that effect of assaulting our
senses since it is unfamiliar, and therefore our curiosities are much
more aroused, and we learn for ourselves, explore for ourselves, make
those first discoveries, rather than depending on the learning
/discoveries of others!!!
Lovely thoughts!

Hi Dan
I enjoyed your narrative connecting you as educator with you as
learner. You
communicate to me the values and qualities of an educator who has a
passion for
learning and who creates the educational spaces and opportunities for
children
to be inspired by sharing in that passion. It is at the core of what I
understand to be inclusive educational practice that enables each child
and
young person to explore possibilities as knowledge creators, developing
talents
for gift creation. Barry Hymer talks in his latest book about going:
'... on to the road less travelled, and
there's no crazed rush to a destination; rather a journey during which
you can
stop off frequently, take in the views, and enjoy the sensations and
experiences that come with a focus on the processes, not just the
products of
learning.'
It seems you share a metaphor when you write:
'A
key driver in my work on the Widening Learning Web is to provide more
side
streets and opportunities for these side streets to be explored.'
I am wondering how others are creating side streets and opportunities
to
explore in developing their practice, which inspires them so they, as
you say,'pass this energy on' to others.
Feel a smile and pass it on
