Hi Nick,
Here in Devon we try to map all monuments and events to a similar
standard - we digitise the known boundaries of the monument or event as
a polygon on our GIS. Events are easier than monuments - we often
(although not always!) know where they are (see thread on Data
Exchange).
I think it is important to digitise the 'correct' area; for example if
there has been a parish survey we'll digitise that whole parish; if
there has been an NMP project over a large area we'll digitise that
whole area. That way, when anyone does a spatial query on the GIS at a
certain point, they are given all the events that cover that area.
If large polygons start to mask other events then we look to change the
way that different polygons are displayed. For example, it's possible
(in ArcMap, at least) to display polygons over a certain size with a
different symbology, based on the area of each polygon (which is
automatically calculated by the GIS).
Hope that helps.
Graham

Subject: [HERFORUM] Mapping Big Events
Hi guys
another thing I have been wondering.
How do people map big events? Or do you not bother mapping them?
For example I am thinking of things like a Parish Survey event or a
larger area event such as an NMP project over a big area, or a survey of
an AONB etc.
I have been doing HER enhancement of records like these and the problem
is if you map them as a polygon it quite often masks other events, but
if you don't map them then you have to come up with a way of searching
which pulls these in.
We use HBSMR, but I would be interested in anyone's thoughts on this, as
its likely to be a common issue regardless of software.
thanks
best wishes
