What I think interesting is the frame which leads us to ask such
questions. I guess Mommsen must have thought about how many Latin
inscriptions there are (he had numbers in the CIL, after all) --- did he
leave evidence of this thinking? Or, has anyone ever tried to calculate
the total of Teubner pages published (or the number of rolls in the
Alexandrian library)? What would such person have done with the number?
