Subject: OII News [2009.10.20]: Professorship Recruitment, teaching, Events Diary and webcasts
Dear friends and colleagues,
We have opened our search for our Professor of Internet Governance and Regulation, just at a time that might well be among the most critical in the history of the Internet. I would welcome your help in bringing this to the attention of top candidates from economics, law, information studies, science and technology studies and other relevant disciplines.
This new professor will join two new OII Research Fellows: Dr Mark Graham joins us from the Department of Geography at Trinity College Dublin to focus on 'cybergeography' and the role of the Internet and related ICTs for development. Greg Taylor joins us from the Department of Economics at the University of Southampton to focus on the microeconomics of marketplaces that exist on, or that are mediated by, the Internet.
On behalf of all the friends and colleagues of the OII, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the new DPhil students and our very first intake of Masters students. Our MSc in 'Social Science of the Internet' is an intensive 10 month full-time Master's degree that provides students with research skills and allows them to focus on areas including Internet economics, law and the internet, and social networks (see http://www.oii.ox.ac.uk/teaching/). The 13 MSc students come from more than half a dozen countries and have a wide range of backgrounds and interests.
The application process for our DPhil and MSc programmes is now open: the first deadline is 20 November (2010/11 entry). If you would like to know more about what it's like to study at the OII, be sure to attend our open day on 25 November to talk to tutors and current students:

Finally, visitors continue to add immensely to the vitality of the Institute. This week, Manuel Castells, our Distinguished Visiting Professor of Internet Studies, is teaching a seminar for our students, focused on his most recent book, and giving a public lecture on Thursday 22 October that will address the global economic crisis (details below). On Friday, Duncan Watts, a physicist and Principal Research Scientist at Yahoo! Research, will be speaking about the role of the Internet in social research. Other current visitors include: Helen Peterson, Desiree Miloshevic, Gregory O'Hare, Mingqiu Song, Yong Jin Park, Edgar Gomez and Tony Wales.
In November we are looking forward to the arrival of Associate Professor Viktor Mayer-Schönberger, now based in Singapore, and Visiting Fellow Damien Tambini, former director of PCMLP at Oxford.
Best wishes,
William Dutton
Director
