Fred,
it's not my intention to engage in any sort of discussion here about the
usefulness of science, in particular because I think we can all agree on
that one.
The point I was trying to make is that if young people in countries like
France turn away from science, this might not be because they fail to see
human progress depends on it - recent surveys suggest the opposite - but
simply because they understand full well that career prospects are nil.
