Home to a King
(21 October 2009)
Home to a king is an innovative art project that combines two themes:
birds and trees, and explores native tree species through text,
small-scale sculpture (nest-boxes), colour and walking. As part of
Durham Book Festival seven nest-boxes with crossword clues on the
names of trees they are on will be placed around Durham University
Botanic Garden.
Home to a king is a country-wide artwork, which Alec Finlay has been
developing in different landscapes in the UK for the past 5 years.
The names of common native species provide the solutions for a series
of cryptic crossword poem-clues, these clues exist as a series of
painted nest-boxes in various locations. The poems hide the names of
trees within the clue, creating a playful intersection of language,
location and ecology.
It is dedicated to the memory of Durham poet Richard Caddel.
