Subject: Cataloguing the Peggy Ramsay Archive - blogging and tweeting on
British Library theatre collections
The archive of the influential play agent Peggy Ramsay is being catalogued at
the British Library. The archive will be available for research from autumn 2010
but in the meantime you can read more about discoveries from the archive on
our Modern Theatre Blog
http://britishlibrary.typepad.co.uk/pinter_archive_blog/ and via our new
Twitter feed http://twitter.com/PeggyRamsay. I will also be attempting to
demystify the cataloguing process by giving an insight into how an archivist
arranges and describes materials.
Peggy Ramsay’s lengthy client list includes David Hare, Joe Orton, Edward
Bond, Caryl Churchill, Howard Brenton and Alan Ayckbourn to name just a few
(see the blog for a full list). The archive mainly consists of client files and
correspondence with key figures in the theatre industry from the 1950s to
1992. It also contains press cuttings, records of scripts received, appointment
diaries, gifts from clients, financial ledgers and statements, contracts, stage
licences and a small collection of photographs and audio recordings. This is a
unique resource for anyone studying post-war British Theatre and playwriting
in particular.
For those interested in Harold Pinter, you can also read about how his archive
was catalogued on the Modern Theatre Blog.
