italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear list members,
Durham's Department of Italian is pleased to announce the following
seminar by Dr Marco Barbon (Paris) and Neelam Srivastava (Newcastle):
Asmara Dream: A photographic presentation and discussion of Eritrea,
Italy's first overseas colony.
Abstract: Eritrea is one of the smallest African states, perched on the
coast of the Red Sea, in the Horn of Africa. Marco Barbon has just
published a book of photographs documenting the colonial architecture of
its capital, entitled Asmara Dream. The first part of the seminar will
introduce the topic of the book by tracing some aspects of Eritrea's
complex history; as Italy's first overseas colony, it was deeply marked
by the Italian presence, whose most visible traces can be seen in the
stunning modernist buildings of Asmara. This historical introduction
will be followed by a commentary on the photographic images. Starting
from a choice of images from the book, the author will talk about his
experience of Asmara and of how his initial ideas for the book developed
into the final project.
The Seminar will take place in Durham, School of Modern Languages and
Cultures, New Elvet, Elvet Riverside, DH1 3JT, Room A56 at 12 noon.
