I'm not sure about SPM5 because I only run SPM8 (think of SPM8 as a
bug-fixed version of SPM5, but with a few additional features). I've
just tried writing a spatially normalised version of a 4D image, and it
seems to work fine.

The additional .mat file is normal, but I'm not sure where the empty
volumes come from.
