If I remember correctly, in Lawrence Block's humorous crime novel "The burglar
who liked to quote Kipling" (New York: Random House, 1979) his continuing character
Bernie Rhodenbarr steals the manuscript of an antisemitic poem by Kipling. The
novel must have been inspired by the publication of "The Burden of Jerusalem"
as an appendix to the Birkenhead biography.
(When I read Lord Birkenhead's biography I was struck by Kipling's unknowing prophecy,
expressed in "'Soldier an' sailor too'": "but to stand an' be still to the Birken'ead
drill is a damn' tough bullet to chew.")
